Business Plan and Early-Stage Funding Seminar Oct 29

Nearly 20 representatives from potential and existing tech-based companies attended the TIP seminar on sources of funding for small and start-up businesses and the importance of writing a good business plan.

Speakers Mike Roer and David Sturgess represented the Connecticut Venture Group, an organization which aids economic growth by bringing together inventors and entrepreneurs with possible investors. Mike Roer, the executive director of CVG, gave a helpful description of the different ways to secure capital when starting and building a business. The options included:

  •         Bootstrapping ("friends and family funding")
  •         Funded research
  •         Leasing
  •         Angel investors
  •         Connecticut Innovations
  •         Venture capital firms
  •         Banks
  •         Strategic corporate partners

Roer gave an overview on how to present a concept as an investment opportunity. Specifically, he focused on how to develop a detailed business plan, and how to create a summary that is suitable for pitching to the investment community.

David Sturgess, the CVG president and partner at Updike, Kelly & Spellacy, P.C., provided a more in-depth presentation on venture capital firms. He described in detail how VC firms typically participate in investments and the pros and cons of using them. He also explained the issues surrounding company valuation and gave examples of potential challenges in start-up financing. Click for the full summary of the presentation
